SIL vs SDA: What's the Difference?

Two acronyms that get confused constantly — one funds support, the other funds the building. Here's how they fit together.

The short version

SIL funds the support you receive at home — help with daily tasks, overnight assistance, building independence. SDA funds the home itself — the physical building, if it's been purpose-built or modified for very high support needs. One is about people, the other is about bricks and mortar.

Supported Independent Living (SIL)

SIL is quoted individually based on your assessed support needs and typically covers help with everyday tasks in a shared or individual living arrangement, including overnight support where needed.

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)

SDA is a separate, specific funding category for participants who meet stricter eligibility criteria — generally extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. It funds enrolment in purpose-built housing, not the support delivered inside it.

Do you need both?

Many participants who receive SDA also receive SIL, since the accommodation and the in-home support are separate needs. But plenty of participants receive SIL without ever needing SDA — for example, if they live in a standard rental with support built around them.

How eligibility is assessed

The NDIA assesses SDA eligibility based on functional capacity assessments and evidence from your allied health team. It's a higher bar than SIL, which is why far fewer participants have SDA in their plan than have SIL.

FAQs

Can I get SDA without SIL?

It's uncommon but possible — for example, if a participant's daily support needs are met by informal supports, family, or a different funded pathway.

Who assesses whether I qualify for SDA?

The NDIA reviews SDA requests using functional assessments, typically coordinated by your Support Coordinator or allied health professionals with your plan.
